State Lotteries

In addition to Powerball and Mega Millions, most US states also offer their own state lotteries. These typically have smaller jackpots but better winning odds:

  • New York Lotto: Jackpots start at $2 million with odds of 1:45 million
  • California SuperLotto Plus: Jackpots from $7 million, odds 1:41 million
  • Texas Lotto: Twice-weekly draws with jackpots starting at $5 million
  • Florida Lotto: One of the oldest state lotteries, established in 1988

Important Tips for US Lotteries

💡 Mind the Taxes

US lottery winnings are subject to federal tax (up to 37%) and often additional state tax. The actual prize can be significantly lower than the announced jackpot.

💰 Lump Sum vs. Annuity

Winners can choose between a one-time cash payment (about 60% of the jackpot) or 30 annual payments. The annuity offers more total value but less immediate liquidity.

🌍 International Play

Non-US citizens can play US lotteries, but the process can be complicated. Winnings for foreigners are subject to a 30% withholding tax.
