History of Irish Lotto: Ireland's National Lottery Since 1988

March 17, 202611 min read

Since 1988, Irish Lotto has been one of the most recognizable weekly rituals in Ireland. From the original 6/36 game to today's 6/47 format and the record-breaking €19.06 million jackpot, here is the full story of how Ireland's flagship lottery evolved.

The Beginning: A National Event in April 1988

Ireland's National Lottery launched in April 1988 with unusual fanfare. The rollout on April 10 was backed by nationwide fireworks, and the first Lotto draw followed just days later. From the beginning, Lotto was more than a game: it was built as a mass-market fundraiser for good causes and quickly became part of the weekly rhythm of Irish life.

The original game used a straightforward 6-from-36 format. Its cultural pull became obvious early: in May 1989, Rita Power and Ann Nolan from Cork made history as Ireland's first Lotto millionaires.

How Irish Lotto Evolved

1
1988–1992

The 6/36 Era

At launch, players chose 6 numbers from 36. A midweek draw arrived as early as 1990 because demand was so strong. The game was simple, the jackpot odds were relatively friendly, and Lotto became a Saturday ritual in record time.

1992–2006

More Numbers, Bigger Jackpots

In 1992, the game moved from 6/36 to 6/39 and added a bonus number. Another jump to 6/42 followed in 1994. The goal was obvious: bigger jackpots, longer rollovers, and a more modern prize structure without changing the core identity of the game.

2006–2015

The 6/45 Redesign

In 2006, Lotto received its biggest makeover yet: a new 6/45 matrix, a guaranteed €2 million minimum jackpot, and a higher line price. Jackpot odds became tougher, but the game moved closer to Europe's bigger flagship lotteries. This era also produced the famous 2008 syndicate win by 26 quarry workers.

The Modern 6/47 Era

Since 2015, Irish Lotto has run in its current 6/47 format. A line costs €2, the bonus structure was refreshed, and the Lotto Plus Raffle became a built-in feature. After repeated rollovers, the cap mechanism produced the record-setting €19.06 million Will Be Won draw in 2022. Since March 11, 2026, the National Lottery has also produced the live draw in-house while keeping its slot before RTÉ One News.

💡 The defining twist of modern Irish Lotto: if the jackpot reaches its current cap and survives multiple draws, the game switches to a Will Be Won draw. If nobody matches all 6 numbers then, the money rolls down to lower prize tiers.

Note: unlike some lotteries, many Irish Lotto non-jackpot prizes are tied to percentages of the prize fund, so the exact payout changes from draw to draw.

🎯 Why 6/47 Stands Out

With jackpot odds of 1 in 10.7 million, Irish Lotto is far more attainable than Eurojackpot or Powerball. That helps explain why the game is built around frequent domestic winners and national familiarity rather than global billion-euro headlines.

✅ Plenty of Smaller Wins

Matching just 3 numbers averages a little over €9 across the year, and even 2 numbers plus the bonus returns a Daily Million Quick Pick. Irish Lotto is not designed only around the once-in-a-generation jackpot dream.

🎆

A Fireworks Launch

The National Lottery did not debut quietly on April 10, 1988. Fireworks across Ireland helped position Lotto as a national event from day one.

The First Millionaires

Rita Power and Ann Nolan from Cork became Ireland's first Lotto millionaires in May 1989. That early headline helped cement the mythology of the game.

The Quarry Workers Syndicate

The €18.96 million win in 2008 went to 26 quarry workers from Carlow and Kilkenny. It remains one of the most famous Irish syndicate stories.

A New TV Era in 2026

Since March 11, 2026, the draws have been produced in-house by the National Lottery itself. Viewers still see the familiar slot before RTÉ One News, but behind the scenes it marks a real production reset.
