Jackpots make the headlines, but popularity is measured by how many people take part. We looked at participation and reach to rank the 10 most played lotteries worldwide.

Lotteries are more than gambling: in many countries they’re part of everyday life. Billion-dollar US jackpots grab headlines, but the bulk of tickets come from long-standing, culturally anchored lotteries. Here’s a ranking of the most played lotteries worldwide by estimated players.

How we ranked them

Positions are based on estimated player counts or participation rates, not jackpot size. El Gordo is #1 because ~75% of Spanish adults join the Christmas draw (about 30 million entries on a single day).

Sources include public sales figures, official operator data, and press reports. Where only ranges exist, we show an estimated band.

Why Do So Many People Play Lottery?

Interestingly, the number of players does not always correlate directly with the size of the jackpot. The Spanish Christmas Lottery (El Gordo) proves this impressively: Although the jackpot per ticket is 'only' €4 million, almost three-quarters of all adult Spaniards participate. The reason? Tradition, a sense of community, and the high probability of winning compared to other lotteries.

In Asia, especially in China, lotteries are often the only legal form of gambling, which explains the enormous participation numbers. A large part of the revenue goes to social projects (Welfare Lottery) or sports (Sports Lottery).
